I was really disappointed that the cipher wasn't something different, but that it only had more "null" characters.


How are people breaking these? I'm doing them by hand and using python to generate digraph frequencies.

Finally, what was the plaintext about? Was it just adum ranting? I couldn't find it on google...

I got:

There's a few mistakes... for instance no "D" since I accidentally thought it was a null. Also, I replaced capital letters w/ symbols so I could use caps just for plaintext.

Some of this stuff though seems as though there were mistakes added in on purpose. I didn't figure out if a certain character meant delete rather than just null.

I got a completely different plaintext... there must be several versions of the challenge.

There was a new rule, and it's a shame the challenge is so solvable without knowing it. I don't think there are any deliberate mistakes in the text.

I used my homophonic solver on CQ B, but didn't trust it because it told me that six characters were the same, and that led to triple letters which don't occur in English text. In the end, though, it was right - those six characters were all nulls!

Generally I do something similar to you - run an analysis script, guess some letters based on its results, run it again... I measure more than just bigraphs, but not much more.

I did it by hand using a Perl script to generate the letter and digraph frequencies as well as the deletion/replacements and essentially got the same plaintext as therethinker.

However, I found three classes of ciphertext characters: (I) a (maximal) sequence of one or more of the characters `FKpuz' deletes the same number of immediately following characters, (II) the characters `Gaik' are "null" ones, and (III) the characters `ABCDEHIJbcdefghjlmnoqrstvwxy' are replaced by `QFEBTPCAU JGD.ZXROLHNSIVMYKW', respectively.

Substituting the ciphertext characters in the order (I) to (III) I got:
WALKING AROUND I OFTEN JUST THINK HERE IS ONE SOLUTION FOR ENABLING MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF PEOPLE TO LIVE TOGETHER. JANE JACOBS ARGUED THAT SHORT BLOCKS ARE BETTER BECAUSE THEY PROVIDE MULTIPLE PATHWAYS. THE BLOCK SIZE IN TOKYO IS INCREDIBLY SMALL SO THE STREETS ARE FASCINATING LABYRINTHS AND ONLY ONCE DID I HIT A DEAD END. [...]

Ah no, weird, I did get the same text - I must have just not read it very carefully - it's not at all familiar!
