That is a nice article, but I don't think it represents the big picture of hacking. I also fail to see how choosing any particular version of linux makes such a large difference as you put it. Believe it or not, windows is a great place for hacking. Anybody can change an open-source program, but have you ever reverse-engineered the windows operating system? I don't understand how modifying open-source material is hacking in any way (although many open-source programs contain a lot of cryptic spaghetti code). My recommendation is to keep multiple booting options with various operating systems including windows and linux.

Secondly, unless you're doing something illegal, you probably don't need networking knowledge, period.

I do agree with you that it takes time to learn. Learning "hacking" as they say, comes with years of experience and initiative, and everybody learns using their own methods. Learning martial arts may have worked for you but that doesn't mean it will help anybody else. You can only go so far with reading anecdotal material, it is ultimately up to each person to learn.

"Hacking" is even a more general term than computer programming, so you have to keep in mind specific goals you want to achieve before even attempting to figure out what "hacking" is about.
