PD: Linux

Does anyone run Linux?
I use Ubuntu, and I have a Windows VPS that I remotely connect to whenever I need to use windows

.
I was thinking about fully wiping windows and using a few Linux Distros. Any good ones that you recommend?

I'm still trying to choose my distro, but ayhow what I'm going to do is run Linux, and run windows on a Virtual machine.

Ubuntu is fairly good. But I am thinking of changing to a different distro, (Of course keeping Ubuntu.)
Is there any application that anyone knows about that will allow me to add music to my iPod without using Windows?

As I just posted in another topic: Ubuntu/WinXP dual-boot here. Mostly due to the fact that my 1G RAM doesn't allow me to run Cinema4D within a virtual environment. Also I'm a composer, and haven't yet found any decent music notation software (MuseScore is getting there, slowly).

But I recently started to look around for other distro's too, since I find Ubuntu too bloated (just try to get rid of Evolution.. until the next dist-upgrade). Since you're used to Ubuntu, you could start by trying different Window Managers (most are less resource-consuming than Gnome). There are specialized Ubuntu-flavours like Kubuntu(KDE), FluxBuntu(FluxBox), Xubuntu(XFCE -> go for the 'clean'-look),...

If you're more looking for something which enables you to configure your systems performance a bit more, but still want to know your way around: try Debian. It was the first distro I ever used, and the one that got me hooked onto Linux. Being not knowledgeable enough about the linux ways, I left it for the 'smooth & easy' Ubuntu.
Also, the usergroup is very large and helpful, both on the forums as in IRC.

If you want to read a lot, but also learn a lot, about how packages and kernelmodules work together: try gentoo. I was really glad I had an extra pc on which I could read the manual, for I would've killed a hell of lot trees printing it

Unfortunatly, my personal support-experience was so wonderful that I vowed to myself to never try it again as long as one of their moderators wandered around that place.. But then again, that could've been just a bad day for the both of us..

That's about my experience with the pengiun..

Oh, I'm also looking into creating an embedded system supporting only Flash/AIR and some networking. Anyone with advise to that choice? I've heard about TinyOS and LFS, but haven't looked into them yet.

try going into your add/remove or the software synaptic and search ipod...but if not get virtual box ad run windows on a virtual machine for the apps you need that are widows only.

Also my biggest problem with linux so far (at least all the distros I've used icluding ubuntu) is that I have an Atheros wlan adapter and I have to jump through hoops and hurdle to get it up and running. the first time i ran ubunut, I was able to find a one line command that got it running, now I can;t for the life of me find the damn doc I had found at the time. It's like they removed it. Everything now talks about madwifi ad other methods but The first one i had found was the best and now I ca find the damn thing anymore.

I thought RhythmBox should be able to. It's in the Ubuntu-repo and available via Add/Remove Programs.

If you don't need the whole playerstuff around it and just need to transfer files, how about Hipo (also in the ubunto-repo)? It only an IPod-filetransfer program, so I assume it should be able to do that :p

I've got Rhythm Box, I'll check it out and see if it can transfer songs, thanks

Dude.. If you can find that command, you will be my god, I have been trying for so long to get Wireless running.. Seriously.. I have been on Xchat, with countless people, scouring the internet, browsing help forums..

Hey s3th backtrack is actually a legit distro... google backtrack3 ad check it out. It may be something you can use

BackTrack indeed is a useful distro.
I only have it as a live-cd though, and use some of the tools whem I'm having problems (some of them, don't even know how to use half of them

)

On the issue of the wireless, network-manager-gnome works for me (Intell Wireless), but it is said that Knoppix has much better hardware and backwards support. Maybe you could get your wireless running from one of their live-cd's and then check out the needed packages?
